Motorbikes in Phangan

Interested in renting a motorbike in Koh Phangan? Just about anyone can, all you need is a passport and the ability to touch the floor with your toes and off you go!

Sounds great, no restrictions, no license, no experience necessary! God help us all!

Here are a few drivers you'll see on the road!

“I can drive guy” - You've seen this guy, he's the drunk carrying the Big Chang. No matter how many he's had, he always thinks he can drive. He says things like “I can drive better with a little ganja and a few beers, it makes me focus”. And forget about trying to take the keys from him, you'll be in for a wrestling match. Next time get him to take a taxi to the Half-moon or Blackmoon parties!

“Novice Nelly” - Normally girls who like to ride in a bikinis and thongs! They usually don't have any experience at all driving but that doesn't stop them from being on a mission around the island. When you ask them where they're going they tell you they're leaving Haad Rin over the hills to Thong Nai Pan.

“Overloaded” - A honeymoon couple with heavy backpacks, a guitar, a volleyball and an ice chest wanting to find Bottle Beach. Look for the guy riding slowly up the hills, and his lady walking behind him mumbling obscenities.

While getting a bike is fun and gives you that extra feeling of freedom, with the wind in your hair, remember caution is still advised. Over the years there have been too many accidents to write home about!

Oh and accidents on the motorbikes can be very expensive. Depending on who you rent your motorbike from even a few scratches will cost you more baht than you want to part with.

Things to watch out for: (a) check your bike for any damage before renting, (b) don't make hard turns on sandy roads, (c) make sure you get off the side of the bike without burning your leg on the exhaust pipe, (d) first gear up all the big hills slow and steady till you get the hang of it!
